Meet Rafael

June 10, 2026

Rafael's journey is one of resilience and determination.

Rafael's journey is one of resilience and determination.

Shortly after he was born, Rafael was diagnosed with profound hearing loss. At just three months old, he was admitted to hospital with serious health complications and was later diagnosed with liver cirrhosis. The first years of his life were filled with medical procedures, hospital visits and uncertainty. Despite these challenges, Rafael showed remarkable strength from a very young age.

At four years old, Rafael was diagnosed with autism and later ADHD. Like many families of children with additional needs, his parents, Trissy and Jeffrey, worried about what the future would hold and whether they would find a school where he could truly belong.

Everything changed when they discovered St Gabriel’s.

"From the moment we visited, we felt genuinely welcomed," says Trissy. "The staff took the time to understand Rafael and reassure us that he would be supported academically, emotionally and socially."

Now in Year 8, Rafael is thriving. A joyful, curious and engaging young man, he brings energy and warmth to the St Gabriel's community. He loves sport, especially basketball, reading and learning about the history of famous people.

Rafael has grown in confidence and independence. Through opportunities such as music, cooking, woodwork, camps and vocational learning experiences, he continues to develop the practical skills needed for life beyond school.

"The School has given him a strong sense of belonging," says Jeffrey. "We have seen him become more independent, expressive and willing to try new things."

Trissy and Jeffrey's greatest hope is that Rafael grows into an independent and confident young man who feels valued, builds meaningful relationships, enjoys life and has opportunities just like everyone else.

Donate today to help support Rafael and other students at St Gabriel’s School by giving to the

St Gabriel’s School 2026 EOFY Appeal. With almost 35 NDIS providers in attendance, families had access to many services, resources and expert advice all in one place.

We are grateful to all our exhibitors for their support and look forward to welcoming everyone back again next year.
